The Newton-Wayne Volunteer Fire Company was once named
the Good Will Fire Company but unknown how long it was
used and when it was first named that. On January 28,
1916 the seven trustees of the Newton Hamilton Volunteer
Fire Company No.1 petitioned the Court of Common Pleas
of Mifflin County to become incorporated in
accordance with the provisions of the act of the
general assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
entitled "An Act To Provide For The Incorporation
And Regulation Of Certain Corporation" approved the
petition of the 29th day of April A.D. 1874.
On the 28th day of February 1916 A.D. the president
judge of the Court of Common Pleas of Mifflin County PA,
signed a decree approving and granting the articles of
incorporation and the company be known as the
"Newton Hamilton Volunteer Fire Company"
and on February 18th, 1946 they went on and also joined
the State Volunteer Fireman's Convention for the first
time. And on October 6th, 1947 they joined the Mifflin
County Fireman's Association. On February 16th, 1948 the
company established regular monthly meetings to take
place on the first and third Tuesday of each month and
still the same today. In 1949 they started a fund to
purchase a new pumper and on March 15th, 1949 the
company also joined the Huntingdon County Fireman's
Convention for the first time and still remain a member
today. On December 31st, 1949 the Ladies Auxiliary
closed their charter membership. Then as time went on
the company purchased the 1st pumper in 1951 and it was
a 1950 Chevy Central with a 500 gallon tank and 500 gpm
pump and it was made in Missouri. Also in 1951, the name of the
Newton Hamilton Volunteer Fire Company was changed to
include Wayne Township thus the name was not adopted and
and signed until May 5th, 1953. A judge then amended the
Articles of Incorporation and the judge of Mifflin
County made it official on the 16th day of June 1953 and
the name was then and still known as the Newton-Wayne
Volunteer Fire Company.
In 1954 the company purchased a 2nd pumper, a 1954 Chevy
1300 gallon tank and 750 gallon per minute pump. In 1971
the company purchased a 1966 Chevrolet Van that carried
the SCUBA equipment, rakes and portable tanks for brush
fires, and also to pull the SCUBA boat. Also in 1971 the
fireman hosted the 25th Annual Huntingdon County
Fireman's Convention. In 1972 the fire company suffered
$43,000.00 worth of damage due to the "Flood of
1972", in 1973 with the help of the Federal
Government a new modern firehouse was constructed on
Kinsloe Avenue and dedication of the $133,000.00
firehouse was held on Saturday December 1st, 1973. On
July 6th, 1974 the company hosted the 28th Annual
Fireman's Convention with the largest crowd of people
(over 7,500) and with the profits from this event the
company purchased a new alarm system.
In 1974 a new Howe Tanker with a 1500 gallon tank and a
1000 gpm pump was received and placed into
service. And also in 1979 the company purchased and
placed into service a 1979 Howe pumper with a 1000
gallon tank and a 1000 gpm Waterous pump which is still
in service today as Engine 26-1. On January 3rd, 1984 the company applied
for fire calls to be dispatched through the Huntingdon
County Communications System.
May 6th, 1986 the company purchased a Chevrolet extended
cab pick-up truck with accessories for $22,000.00. On
July 15th, 1986 the agreement between Mount Union
Ambulance and the Newton-Wayne Volunteer Fire Company's
1st Responders Unit was signed. On November 29th, 1989
the company was recognized as a Quick Response service
by the Local EMS Council.
June 19th, 1990 received notification of a meeting on
June 28th to discuss being part of the County Wide
Communications and 911 System.
January 1st, 1991 established a uniform dress code for
parades, memorials, and formal activities.
October 1st, 1991 a $35,000.00 loan at 2% was approved
by PEMA for refurbishing of the 1974 Howe Tanker and on
December 13th, 1991 the Tanker was refurbished and
returned to service.
January 1st, 1992 the 911 Emergency Dispatch of Mifflin
County became officially in service and we were then
being dispatched by them.
September 17th, 1992 the members of the Newton-Wayne
Fire Company's Ladies Auxiliary changed the organization
name and By-Laws to the Newton-Wayne Fire Company
Auxiliary, hereby accepting male and female members.
An on February 2nd, 1993 approved the truck committee to
proceed to secure bids to refurbish the 1979 Howe Pumper,
also the company purchased a new tanker in 2000 from
E-ONE and placed into service as Tanker 26-1. The
company and residents have lots of past
memories. |
